Latham History
Latham Elementary has a rich history dating back to 1867. Latham is the oldest public school in South Lane School District, originally built as a one-room school, at the north end of the current Weyerhaeuser property on Highway 99 South. A two-room building was erected in 1922, then moved in 1942 to its present location just south of Cottage Grove, Oregon. Latham’s first teacher was John Arnold. Mr. Arnold later became president of Columbia School—the forerunner to Oregon State University.
A complete history of Latham was complied by Calvin Davis, principal of Latham for an astounding 33 years (1952-1985). If you are interested in this document, we would be glad to send it to you electronically. To request a copy please email: chamilt2@lane.k12.or.us
