The Wonder of Dr. Seuss
Dear Families,
On Friday, we celebrated Read-Across-American which annually coincides with Dr. Suess's birthday on March 2nd. Thank you for having your child share their favorite Dr. Seuss stories. We were able to do many fun read-alouds with all of our Dr. Seuss books. A couple of key ideas were reinforced for me as I was reading these great stories and I thought they were important to share with you.
As you may know already, Dr. Seuss wrote his books specifically for beginning readers. In fact, he wrote his first book, "The Cat in the Hat" as a challenge to write a fun and engaging story using 220 of the most commonly used sight words. Prior to this, students had only books like, "Dick and Jane" to practice their sight words. Also, Dr. Seuss books contain the sound/spelling combinations that we learn in first grade. So, I highly encourage you to have many books from Dr. Seuss's collection in your home. Our school library and the Cottage Grove library are great resources as well as second-hand stores. There have been many times that I have heard struggling readers read a Dr. Seuss book independently with pride. I can't help but add that many of Dr. Seuss's stories include gentle life lessons about the importance of loving ourselves, others, and our beautiful planet.
